Student Finance Documents Checklist: England 2026/27
A route-based checklist showing what to enter, what to send now, what to send only when requested and what not to upload unnecessarily.
Your route decides which evidence applies.
Unrequested financial evidence can delay an application.
Send personal-reasons evidence as soon as you have applied.
The short answer
Most applicants enter core details first. Evidence is route-specific. Use your form or account task to decide what to send, except where official guidance tells you to send evidence proactively, such as compelling-personal-reasons or independent-status evidence.
There is no single pack of documents that every Student Finance England applicant should upload.
Some details are entered into the application. Some evidence must be sent for a particular route. Some documents should be supplied only when your form or account asks for them. Sending extra evidence can slow the application down.
This checklist covers full-time undergraduate Student Finance England applications for courses starting from 31 August to 31 December 2026.
Check the separate Lifelong Learning Entitlement route. Different rules may also apply to part-time, postgraduate, Initial Teacher Training, NHS or specialist funding.
For forms, deadlines and the application sequence, use our How to Apply for Student Finance England in 2026/27 guide.
The four evidence rules
TYPE OR ENTER
Information normally entered into the application rather than uploaded separately.
- valid UK passport details
- National Insurance number, if issued
- bank, course and living details
- previous-study history
- parent or partner information
- EUSS share code where requested
SEND WITH YOUR CLAIM
Evidence official guidance expects proactively, rather than after a later task.
- compelling-personal-reasons evidence
- independent-status evidence
- evidence a paper form tells you to include
SEND IF REQUIRED
Conditional evidence triggered by your answers, category or SFE task.
- household-income documents
- relationship or residence evidence
- work or self-employment evidence
- dependant or extra-support evidence
DO NOT SEND UNLESS INSTRUCTED
Duplicate or irrelevant evidence can create avoidable delays.
- unrequested P60s
- unrequested Tax Returns
- duplicate evidence
- a physical UK passport
Student Loans Company guidance specifically warns that uploading financial evidence such as a P60 or Tax Return when it was not requested can delay the application.
Route finder: what should you prepare?
Use this as a navigation tool, not as a substitute for the current form or account task.
| Your situation | Have ready | What usually happens |
|---|---|---|
| Valid UK passport, applying online | Passport details | Enter the details. Do not post the physical UK passport. |
| Valid UK passport, cannot apply online | Current UK passport-details form | Use the form for the relevant academic year. Do not post the physical passport. |
| UK national without a valid UK passport | Copy of birth or adoption certificate | Upload or post a copy. The original certificate is not required. |
| Irish citizen using the Irish passport route | Original valid Irish passport, CRN and return address | Post the passport using the official identity route. If you hold a valid UK passport, use the UK passport-details route instead. |
| EUSS status route | Share code, status dates and residence information where requested | Enter or provide the status information required by the application. EUSS status alone does not decide the funding package. |
| First migrant-worker application | Original passport or National Identity Card plus current work evidence | Follow the current migrant-worker instructions. The original identity document is sent with the initial application; supporting work evidence follows the current upload or postal instructions. |
| Family-member route | Family member identity plus relationship evidence where required | Evidence can include the family member identity document and a birth, adoption or marriage certificate, depending on the route. |
| Tuition-fee-only funding | Route-specific evidence and the current evidence fact sheet | If you send copies under the tuition-fee-only evidence route, the copies must be certified to the current SLC standard. |
| Income-assessed support | Parent or partner income information for 2024/25 | Income is normally matched through HMRC. Financial documents are not automatic uploads. |
| Independent or estranged student | Evidence matching the independent-status condition | Provide the relevant evidence rather than relying on missing parental income information. |
| Previous study plus compelling personal reasons | Cover letter with CRN and supporting evidence | Send the evidence as soon as you have applied. |
| Disabled Students’ Allowance | Existing suitable disability evidence or the correct DSA evidence route | The evidence route depends on the condition. A specific learning difficulty uses a diagnostic-report route. |
Identity evidence
UK national with a valid UK passport
If you apply online, enter the passport details requested in the application. If you cannot apply online, use the current UK passport details form. Do not send the physical UK passport.
UK national without a valid UK passport
You can upload or post a copy of your UK birth or adoption certificate. The original certificate is not required.
Irish citizen
If you hold a valid UK passport, provide your UK passport details instead of using the Irish passport route. If you use the Irish identity route, current guidance says to send your original valid Irish passport by post. Include your 11-digit customer reference number (CRN) and return address.
PO Box 210
Darlington
DL1 9HJ
Non-UK and non-Irish national
The application can ask for details from an accepted passport, national identity card, biometric residence card or expired biometric residence permit. Identity evidence alone does not prove every funding category.
Certified copies for tuition-fee-only evidence
This applies to the tuition-fee-only evidence route. It does not replace another SFE instruction that explicitly asks for an original or allows an ordinary copy.
The current SLC evidence fact sheet says that any copy sent under the tuition-fee-only route must be certified.
A certified copy must be stamped, signed and dated as a true copy of the original by an unrelated person of good standing in the community. The certifier must provide their name, job title, address and contact telephone number.
Examples in the current guidance include a doctor, lawyer, civil servant, teacher or lecturer, police officer or minister of religion.
EUSS, worker and family-member evidence
Do not build one generic “EU evidence pack”. The evidence depends on the category used for the application.
EU Settlement Scheme status
Depending on the route, Student Finance England may ask for an EU Settlement Scheme share code, the date your status was granted or expires and addresses where you have lived.
If you have Pre-Settled Status, read our Pre-Settled Status and Student Finance England guide for the distinction between tuition-fee-only, worker and family-member routes.
First migrant-worker application
The current migrant-worker guidance, which is still labelled for 2025/26 at the time of this review, says that on a first application you should use the PN1 route and send an original passport or National Identity Card with the application. Do not treat the original identity document as an online upload.
For an employed applicant, current guidance asks for payslips covering the last three months and a signed employment contract showing the employment start date and contracted weekly hours. Self-employed, agency and zero-hours routes use different evidence.
After the application is created, supporting evidence can be uploaded through the online account. Upload each item only once because duplicate uploads can slow processing.
PO Box 89
Darlington
DL1 9AZ
Recheck the migrant-worker evidence guidance before posting.
Family-member evidence
Where the application relies on a qualifying family relationship, evidence can include the relevant family member’s identity evidence and proof of the relationship, such as a birth, adoption or marriage certificate. Follow the current form or account task because the requirement varies by category.
Household-income evidence
Household income is relevant where a student is applying for the full income-assessed Maintenance Loan, Childcare Grant, Adult Dependants’ Grant or Parents’ Learning Allowance.
For a 2026/27 application, Student Finance England normally uses household income from 6 April 2024 to 5 April 2025. A parent or partner normally provides their income details separately, and SFE usually checks them with HMRC.
If the relevant household-income information is not provided, a dependent student will not get the full Maintenance Loan available and may receive only the basic amount that does not depend on household income.
Do parents need to upload a P60?
Not automatically. Financial evidence may be requested in situations including income where the parent or partner lives abroad, finalising a current-year income assessment, private pension contributions or additional voluntary contributions.
Do not upload a P60 or Tax Return just in case. If a parent or partner cannot provide their information online, check the current PFF2 route.
Current-year income assessment
For 2026/27, the normal comparison year is 6 April 2024 to 5 April 2025. A current-year income assessment can normally be requested when expected household income for 6 April 2026 to 5 April 2027 is both at least 15% lower than the comparison year and £58,387 or less for the full current tax year.
If expected household income is £58,387 or more but less than £70,131, the household may still qualify depending on the student’s circumstances.
The parent or partner must first give the earlier-year information, keep the estimate updated and confirm actual income after the tax year ends. If the estimate was too low, the student can be overpaid and may have to repay the difference.
Independent and estranged student evidence
A parent refusing to provide income information does not automatically make a student independent.
Student Finance England recognises several independent-status routes, including being 25 or over on the first day of the academic year, having care of a person under 18, marriage or civil partnership, having no living parents, at least three years of self-support, parents who cannot be traced or contacted in defined circumstances, permanent estrangement and certain local-authority-care situations.
| Independent-status reason | Current evidence guidance |
|---|---|
| 25 or over on the first day of the academic year | Age is assessed from the application and identity information; follow any SFE evidence task if one appears. |
| Married or in a civil partnership | Marriage certificate or civil partnership schedule where evidence is requested. |
| Supported yourself for at least three years | P60s or a signed and dated employer letter on headed paper confirming dates worked and earnings; Jobcentre Plus letters for relevant benefit periods. The three years do not have to be consecutive, but periods supported by your parents do not count as self-support. |
| Have care of a child | Evidence of care can include Child Benefit, Child Tax Credit or the child element of Universal Credit. Official 2026/27 sources are not fully aligned on copy versus original birth-certificate wording, so check the exact form or account task before sending one. |
| Estranged from parents | Declare estrangement in the application, then either complete and return the current confirmation of estrangement form or send a supporting statement from an independent third party with knowledge of the estrangement. |
| Care leaver or qualifying local-authority-care route | Follow the current care-leaver evidence route. From 2026/27, qualifying care leavers can receive the maximum Maintenance Loan without household-income means testing, subject to the current rules. |
| Other independent routes | These include having no living parents, parents who cannot be traced, and specific cases where contacting or assessing parents abroad is not practical or could put them in jeopardy. Follow the current assessment guide and any SFE evidence request. |
Estrangement evidence
Current guidance says estrangement normally means no verbal or written contact with your parents for at least 12 months and that this is unlikely to change. If you have had contact within the last 12 months, you can still apply, but explain the nature of the contact and SFE will review the circumstances case by case.
Declare the estrangement in your student-finance application, then either complete the current confirmation of estrangement form or send a supporting statement from an independent third party who knows the circumstances.
A letter from your parents declaring the estrangement is not valid evidence of estrangement. If you post estrangement evidence, current guidance says to send copies rather than original documents.
Previous study and compelling personal reasons
Declare all previous higher-education study requested by the application, including incomplete study and study outside the UK where relevant. Do not upload every old certificate automatically.
If you are asking for extra tuition-fee support because of personal reasons, current SLC guidance says to send the evidence as soon as you have applied.
Include a cover letter with your CRN explaining what happened, when it happened and how it affected your studies. Evidence examples include a headed letter from a doctor or social worker, a headed letter from your university or college, or copies of birth or death certificates where relevant.
Each application is assessed individually. Evidence does not guarantee that an extra year will be awarded.
Open the official repeat-year and personal-reasons guidance.
Name, marital-status and application changes
For normal full-time course or university changes, use the official change process rather than uploading an offer letter that was not requested.
After the academic year has started, ask your university or college to tell Student Finance England about course, repeat-year or Tuition Fee Loan changes. You still need to report personal changes yourself, including changes to your name, marital status and where you live.
If you are a full-time tuition-fee-only applicant and the EUCO1 route applies, complete EUCO1 and send it by post using the address on the form.
If your name changes
Send a signed and dated letter with your CRN and a copy of the relevant evidence.
- marriage certificate
- final or conditional order
- decree absolute
- change-of-name deed poll
If your marital status changes
Send a signed and dated letter with your CRN and a copy of the relevant evidence.
- marriage certificate
- final or conditional order
- decree absolute
- civil partnership final order
Disabled Students’ Allowance and extra-support evidence
Extra-support evidence is route-specific. Do not use one universal dependants or disability checklist.
Disabled Students’ Allowance
If you already have suitable evidence of your disability or condition, use the current DSA instructions for that evidence. If you do not already have evidence to prove DSA eligibility, a medical professional can provide information using the current Disability Evidence form.
That form cannot be used to confirm a specific learning difficulty.
For a specific learning difficulty such as dyslexia, the current 2026/27 DSA notes require a diagnostic report written in accordance with the 2005 SpLD Working Group Guidelines, from either a Practitioner Psychologist or a suitably qualified specialist teacher holding an SpLD Assessment Practising Certificate.
Childcare Grant, Adult Dependants’ Grant and Parents’ Learning Allowance each use their own evidence route. Follow the matching SFE task instead of building one generic dependants pack.

- bank, course and living details
- previous-study history
- sponsor income figures
- EUSS share code where requested
Proactive evidence for the matching route
- CPR evidence
- independent-status evidence
- evidence the paper form explicitly requires
- original identity evidence where the route explicitly requires it
Conditional evidence
- household-income evidence
- relationship or residence evidence
- work or self-employment evidence

Before uploading or posting anything, make sure it is complete, readable and uncropped. Follow the exact copy, original or certification rule for your funding route.
Do not send passports, financial records, medical evidence or other sensitive SFE documents to Ready Study Global. Submit them only through the official Student Finance England route.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to upload every document before I apply?
No. Some information is entered into the application, some evidence is supplied with a specific claim and some should be sent only when the form or account requires it.
Do parents need to upload P60s?
Not automatically. Student Finance England normally checks household-income information with HMRC. Uploading an unrequested P60 or Tax Return can delay the application.
Should I wait for SFE to request compelling-personal-reasons evidence?
No. If you are asking for extra tuition-fee support because of personal reasons, current guidance says to send the evidence as soon as you have applied.
If I am estranged, do I need a professional letter?
Not necessarily. First declare the estrangement in the application. You can then use the current confirmation of estrangement form or a supporting statement from an independent third party who knows your circumstances.
Do tuition-fee-only applicants need certified copies?
Under the current tuition-fee-only evidence fact sheet, copies you send must be certified. Check the current fact sheet because other Student Finance England routes have different copy and original rules.
Is a P60 enough to prove I supported myself for three years?
It can form part of the evidence. Current guidance also allows an employer letter and relevant Jobcentre Plus evidence. The three years do not need to be consecutive.
Do I need to send an original birth certificate for a child?
Do not assume so. Current official sources are not fully aligned on copy versus original wording. Follow the exact 2026/27 form or account instruction for your route before sending an original document.
