If your details change after applying for Student Finance England (SFE), report the change through the route that applies to you. You may need to update your account, submit a form, ask your university to report an academic change, or ask your parent or partner to update their income information.

This guide covers England-funded undergraduate applications for 2026/27 under the existing student finance system. Different arrangements apply to postgraduate funding and students funded by Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland.

Key takeaways

  • The reporting route depends on your funding type and the detail being changed.
  • For course or university changes, check whether your course, or the academic year you applied for, has already started.
  • Part-time and tuition-fee-only applicants have specific forms. Do not assume the full-time online route applies.
  • Report a move and check that your term-time living arrangements are correct, because they affect your Maintenance Loan.
  • Processing estimates can change, and a reassessment may increase or reduce your funding.

Choose the right route first

Use this table to identify your starting point. Follow the current form instructions where evidence or provider confirmation is required.

The official change-an-application guide explains the main responsibilities. Reporting a change does not itself establish that you qualify for additional funding.

Changing your course or university

Before making a course change

The how-to guide gives the full-time online route where the start date of the course you initially applied for has not passed. If you are returning, check the course/year distinction below with your provider first. For an online change, sign in to your student finance account, open the relevant undergraduate application, choose the option to change it, then select the university, college and course section.

If that change cannot be made online, SFE's personal-details guidance allows you to upload a completed 2026/27 CO1 form through your account. You can also post it to the address printed on the form. Part-time applicants and those eligible for tuition fee support only must follow their separate instructions below.

When your provider needs to report the change

Once the course has started, ask your university or college to send the request to SFE. GOV.UK describes the cut-off in two ways. The SFE how-to guide refers to the start date of the course you initially applied for. The main change-an-application guide refers to the start of the year you applied for. If you are a returning student, or unsure whether your course has officially started for student finance purposes, check with your university or college before making a change.

Give the provider clear details of the change and ask when it was submitted. Course changes and repeats can also affect your remaining funding. Our repeat-year and course-transfer guide explains the entitlement questions to check. Updating the application does not guarantee support.

Part-time and tuition-fee-only forms

Part-time: CO2

The CO2 landing page directs part-time students to use the form before their course starts. Once it has started, contact your university or college about changes to course details.

Use the 2026/27 version for a 2026/27 application. Follow the sections relevant to your change, including university confirmation where requested, and sign the declaration. GOV.UK allows CO2 to be sent through your account or by post using the address on the form.

The 2026/27 CO2 form specifically says to contact SFE by telephone for a bank-account change instead of completing CO2 for that purpose.

Tuition fee support only: EUCO1

If you are eligible for a Tuition Fee Loan but not maintenance support, use the EUCO1 guidance. This category concerns your funding eligibility, not simply your nationality or a decision to borrow no Maintenance Loan.

Send EUCO1 by post to the address printed on it. After your course starts, involve your university or college for a course change, repeat or Tuition Fee Loan change.

The 2026/27 EUCO1 form also says that an address can be updated through your account or by calling. It directs students changing the amount of Tuition Fee Loan requested to the separate EU Tuition Fee Loan Request Form. Follow the form-specific route instead of assuming every change uses the same channel.

Updating personal details and living arrangements

You can update your home address, contact address, email and telephone number through the personal-details section of your account.

Moving somewhere new is a change you must report. If you move between living with your parents and living away from them, check that your application shows where you will live during term time, because this affects your Maintenance Loan. Full-time students can report changes through their account, and the CO1 form also asks where you will live during term time. If you are unsure whether an address update has changed your assessment, contact SFE.

For example, a move back to your parents' home should not be treated as an email-address correction. Your loan assessment may need to change because where you live is relevant to the amount of support available.

For a name or marital-status change, send SFE a letter containing your customer reference number, the date, your signature and the relevant evidence. The official instructions explain which documents apply and allow the letter and evidence to be sent through your account or by post. If you cannot supply the listed evidence, contact SFE.

Marriage, separation or a changed household can affect whose income is assessed. SFE's 2026/27 assessment guide explains independent-student categories and partner-income assessment. Do not assume a change removes every household-income check.

Changing your bank details or requested loan amount

For an online bank update, use the bank-account section within your personal details. SFE requires four working days' notice before an expected payment for the new details to take effect. The account must be a UK bank or building society account in your own name.

Changing details too close to a payment does not reroute that payment in time. Contact SFE if you are concerned about a payment going to an account you can no longer use.

For a Maintenance Loan request, the how-to guide says you should be able to change the amount through your account until one month before the end of the academic year. If the online option is unavailable, obtain the Loan Request Form through your account. This deadline should not be assumed to cover every Tuition Fee Loan route.

When your parent or partner's income changes

Your parent or partner should correct inaccurate income information and report relevant changed circumstances. For the existing system, the supporter update guidance directs them to PFF2 for the correct academic year, submitted through their account or by post.

A current year income assessment is different from correcting a mistake. For 2026/27, the CYI guidance normally compares expected income for 6 April 2026 to 5 April 2027 with the 2024/25 tax year. The expected reduction must be at least 15%, with expected household income of £58,387 or less. Some households below £70,131 may qualify depending on the student's circumstances.

The supporter must already have supplied previous-year information. Where a parent's partner also lives in the household, both need to complete the form even if only one income changed. Keep estimates updated and supply actual-income evidence after the tax year ends. Missing evidence can reduce the student to basic finance and mean the student has to repay any extra support straight away.

Follow the evidence request for your own year. The currently published finalisation guidance mainly deals with finalising 2025/26 income. Do not submit an earlier year's finalisation form as though it were the 2026/27 form.

For the wider assessment rules, see our household-income guide.

If your own income changes

Earnings from work during an academic year of your course, including holiday, evening or weekend work, do not need to be declared for your own student finance assessment. Taxable unearned income, such as savings interest, rental income or dividends, does need to be declared. Payments from an employer who releases you from your job to attend the course should be included. See the student's own income section in the 2026/27 assessment guidance.

Leaving, suspending or cancelling

If you decide to leave or suspend, tell your university or college and SFE promptly. The stopping-finance guidance explains the student contact route. GOV.UK says to stop your student finance payments as soon as you decide to suspend or leave, to reduce any amount you may need to repay.

If you suspend because you are seriously ill, you might receive eligible Maintenance Loan or grants for 60 days from suspension. Other serious personal reasons have a separate route for requesting help. The suspension guidance does not promise that every absence preserves all funding automatically.

If you have registered and want to cancel your application, ask your provider to do this. Before registration, the how-to guide describes the online cancellation option.

Your Tuition Fee Loan liability for the year depends on the term in which you leave or suspend. The repayment guidance explains the applicable amounts.

An overpayment is different from the ordinary student-loan balance. Some overpayments must be repaid sooner, but treatment depends on the support and your return plans. The repayment guidance includes deductions from future support in some returning-student cases and repayment-plan options where relevant. Ask SLC to explain your own reassessment.

How long will the change take?

On 2 October 2026, the SFE timescales page, updated on 28 September, showed 22 working days for a change of circumstances and for financial information including PFF2, for items submitted that week. These figures describe when you should expect an update. Working days exclude weekends and bank holidays. These are estimates, so check the live page when submitting.

The general how-to guide describes a four-week approval or processing period for certain application changes. Provider notifications sent for manual processing have another published service standard: the SLC provider guidance states 20 working days off-peak and 30 during August to the end of November. These figures describe different routes and should not be treated as one universal deadline.

Record what you submitted, when, and any provider confirmation. Check your account and SFE messages before sending further evidence. Our documents checklist explains how to organise requested documents.

Courses starting from January 2027

The Department for Education's LLE overview says learners with existing funding for a course started before 1 January 2027 continue receiving funding for that course through the current system. It sets late October 2026 as the application opening period for eligible courses and modules starting from January 2027.

Continuing the same funded course and starting a different course are not interchangeable. Check the applicable regime with SFE and your provider before applying these forms to a new 2027 course.

Frequently asked questions

Can I update a part-time course online like a full-time course?

Follow the CO2 instructions for a pre-start change. Once the course starts, contact your provider about course details. GOV.UK also refers to the start of the year you applied for, so returning students, or anyone unsure of the course or year start, should check with their provider before making a change. Uploading CO2 through an account is different from changing the course directly in an online form.

Can a tuition-fee-only student change an address online?

The current EUCO1 form says address changes can be made through an account or by calling. That does not make the full-time online academic-change route available for every tuition-fee-only application.

Does reporting a change guarantee more student finance?

No. SFE will apply the relevant assessment rules. A change may increase, reduce or leave your support unchanged, depending on the details.

Your next step

Identify the change and check your funding type. For academic changes, check whether the course you initially applied for, or the year you applied for, has started. If you are returning or unsure which trigger applies, check with your university or college before using the relevant official route. Keep a record of the submission and follow any evidence request.
