Education system
Germany includes universities, universities of applied sciences and other recognised higher-education providers. Admission, language, aptitude and qualification-recognition requirements can differ by institution, programme and applicant background.
Undergraduate admission depends on whether the previous school qualification is recognised for direct entry. A preparatory route or additional evidence may be required.
Master’s programmes commonly assess subject fit, prior credits, grades and language evidence. Requirements can be programme-specific even within the same institution.
Doctoral routes may be individual or structured and require suitable supervision, research fit and separate academic approval.

Qualified official information
Current official guidance permits many students from third countries to work up to 140 full days or 280 half-days per year, or up to 20 hours per week. Different rules can apply to preparatory study, self-employment and specific residence conditions.

Qualified official information
After successfully completing a German higher-education qualification, some graduates may receive a residence permit for up to 18 months to seek qualified employment. A separate residence route is required when suitable employment is found.
