Short answer
Confirm that Student Finance England is the correct body, identify whether you need full support or tuition-fee-only funding, use the current route and form, apply without waiting for a confirmed place, and complete every evidence and registration task in your account.
Short answer
Student Finance England applications are open for full-time undergraduate courses starting from 31 August to 31 December 2026.
You do not need a confirmed university place before applying. Enter the course and provider you are most likely to choose, then update the existing application if your plans change.
For most eligible courses and modules starting on or after 1 January 2027, check the Lifelong Learning Entitlement route. Current guidance says applications open from September 2026, subject to applicant, course and provider eligibility.
This guide covers applicants who normally live in England. Different rules may apply to part-time study, postgraduate loans, Initial Teacher Training, NHS or specialist support and applicants from Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland.
1. Confirm that Student Finance England is correct
Student Finance England normally deals with eligible students whose home is usually in England. The location of the university does not decide the funding body by itself.
Use the separate funding system if you normally live in Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland.
Nationality, immigration status, residence history, previous study, course and provider eligibility can all affect entitlement. Check the official eligibility guidance before choosing an application route.
Your university decides home fee status. Student Finance England separately decides public funding.
2. Choose the correct application route
Applying in the wrong way can delay the application. Use the live form finder on the day you apply because forms differ by academic year, study mode and funding category.
| Your situation | Normal route | Form or action to check |
|---|---|---|
| New student eligible for a Tuition Fee Loan and Maintenance Loan | Apply online | Create or use your Student Finance England account |
| New full-support student who cannot apply online or is directed to a paper route | Apply by post | Use the live form finder; the new full-time full-support form is normally PN1 |
| Continuing full-support student | Reapply online | Use the existing account; PR1 is available where a continuing student cannot apply online |
| New full-time student eligible only for a Tuition Fee Loan | Apply by post | Use the current EU26N form where it applies to your route |
| Continuing full-time student eligible only for a Tuition Fee Loan | Apply by post | Check the current instructions; the 2026/27 continuing form is EUPR1A |
| Applicant relying on a route such as migrant-worker status | Follow route-specific instructions | Use the live form finder and evidence guidance for that category |
Open the official student-finance form finder.
How do you know whether you are tuition-fee-only?
Do not guess from the loan you want. The category depends on the eligibility route.
Some people with Pre-Settled Status and other protected categories may qualify for a Tuition Fee Loan only, while an eligible worker, qualifying family member or another full-support category may also allow a Maintenance Loan. Read the RSG guide to Pre-Settled Status and Student Finance England for the route and evidence distinctions.
3. Know the dates and deadlines
The recommended application date is not the same as the final deadline.
Recommended date, now passed
Official 2026 sources published conflicting dates; apply immediately
For courses starting between 1 August and 31 December 2026
The recommended dates have passed, but applications remain possible. Apply now rather than waiting.
If you apply close to the course start or after it begins, Student Finance England may initially award the basic rate that does not depend on household income while the full assessment is completed. Any additional amount owed can be paid later.
| Course starts | General final date |
|---|---|
| 1 August to 31 December | 31 May after the course started |
| 1 January to 31 March | 30 September after the course started |
| 1 April to 30 June | 31 December after the course started |
| 1 July to 31 July | 31 March after the course started |
Check the current official deadline table before submitting.
4. Prepare the application information
Have the following ready where relevant:
- Legal name and contact details
- National Insurance number, if you have one
- Passport or accepted identity information
- Nationality, immigration and residence details
- Course, university and expected start date
- Previous higher-education study
- Term-time living arrangements
- A UK bank or building-society account in your name
- Parent or partner contact details where income will be assessed
Only send documents required by the application or requested by Student Finance England. Unnecessary or unclear evidence can delay processing.
5. Prove your identity using the correct route
Online applicants are normally asked to enter valid passport details.
If you are a UK applicant who cannot apply online, use the current UK passport-details form. Do not post your physical UK passport.
If you do not have a valid UK passport or it has expired, the route depends on nationality:
- a UK national can upload or post a copy of a birth or adoption certificate;
- an Irish national may need to send the physical Irish passport;
- a non-UK or non-Irish national may be able to provide details from an accepted passport, national identity card, biometric residence card or expired biometric residence permit.
Follow the live proof-of-identity guidance. Some routes require original documents, while others accept copies or online status details.
6. Complete household-income tasks where needed
Household income is normally required when applying for the full income-assessed Maintenance Loan, Childcare Grant, Adult Dependants’ Grant or Parents’ Learning Allowance.
For 2026/27, Student Finance England normally uses household income from 6 April 2024 to 5 April 2025.
The parent or partner normally confirms their information separately and should not use the student's login. If the online route is unavailable, they can use the current PFF2 form.
Current-year income assessment
For 2026/27, a parent or partner can ask for a current-year income assessment when the expected household income for 6 April 2026 to 5 April 2027 is both:
- at least 15% lower than the 2024/25 income already provided; and
- £58,387 or less for the full current tax year.
Household income between £58,387 and £70,131 may still qualify depending on the student's circumstances.
The parent or partner must first provide the 2024/25 information, keep the estimate updated and confirm actual income after the tax year ends. If income was underestimated, the student may need to repay an overpayment.
Use the official current-year income guidance and current CYI form.
If parent information is unavailable
A parent refusing to provide income details does not automatically make a student independent. The student will not get the full amount of Maintenance Loan available and may receive only the basic rate that does not depend on household income.
A student may be treated as independent in specific circumstances, including where they:
- are 25 or over on the first day of the academic year;
- have supported themselves financially for at least three years;
- are or have been married or in a civil partnership;
- have care of a child;
- are a care leaver;
- are permanently estranged from their parents.
Evidence depends on the route. It can include employment or benefit records, relationship evidence, proof of care, care records or a professional supporting statement for estrangement.
If you are a care leaver, from the 2026/27 academic year your household income is not used to calculate your Maintenance Loan and you can choose to borrow the maximum amount. Student Finance England will still use household income to check what other funding you can get.
7. Apply without waiting for a confirmed university place
Enter the course and provider you are most likely to choose. This does not commit you to that course. Update the application if your university, course or living plans change after an offer, Clearing or another decision.
Do not create a second Student Finance England account or submit a duplicate application simply because your course choice changes.
You expect to study Business Management at University A but are waiting for a final decision. Use University A and the likely course. If you later accept University B through Clearing, update the existing application rather than starting again.
8. What happens after submission
Your account shows the application and outstanding tasks.
SFE may request identity documents or clarification.
A parent or partner may need to confirm income separately.
Your account and letter show the support assessed.
The provider confirms attendance or registration.
Maintenance goes to the student; tuition funding goes to the provider.
Processing times vary by application type, evidence and demand. Official pages provide general estimates, while Student Finance England maintains a current-timescales page that changes as workloads change.
Check the live SFE application timescales before assuming the application is delayed.
A new student applies in August 2026, after the 15 May recommendation. The application is still possible. Submit immediately, complete every account task and prepare for the possibility that the full income-assessed amount will not be confirmed before the first payment date.
9. Update changes correctly
Tell Student Finance England if you change your course, university, repeat year, Tuition Fee Loan amount, name, marital status, term-time living arrangements, address, contact details or bank information.
Before the academic year starts, many full-time applicants can update university or course details in the online account. After the year starts, ask your university or college to tell Student Finance England about course, repeat-year or fee changes. You remain responsible for reporting personal changes.
Full-time tuition-fee-only applicants should use form EUCO1 to report changes and send it by post when the official instructions require that route.
If your name or marital status changes, send Student Finance England a signed and dated letter that includes your customer reference number, together with the relevant evidence. Accepted evidence can include a marriage certificate, civil-partnership certificate, decree absolute, final order, deed poll or statutory declaration, depending on the change.
10. Returning after time out or repeating study
If you return after stopping a course for personal reasons, you may need to reapply and provide a letter explaining what happened, plus supporting evidence.
Evidence can include a letter from a doctor, social worker, university or college, or relevant certificates. Include the customer reference number when uploading or posting evidence.
Previous study can affect remaining entitlement, even if no qualification was completed. Declare all previous higher-education study and wait for an individual assessment.
Use our previous-study and Student Finance entitlement guide to work through the years formula, equivalent-or-higher qualification exceptions and the LLE boundary.
11. Registration, payment and annual reapplication
A funding decision does not release payment by itself.
Maintenance Loan payments are usually released after the university or college confirms registration. The money is paid to the student's bank account, normally in instalments. Tuition Fee Loan payments are made directly to the provider.
Check the entitlement letter, bank details, payment schedule, outstanding evidence tasks and registration status.
You must reapply for every academic year. Student finance does not automatically renew for the whole course.
Common mistakes
- Waiting for a confirmed university place
- Applying to the wrong UK funding body
- Choosing online when the route requires a postal form
- Using the wrong academic-year form
- Creating a duplicate account or application
- Omitting previous study
- Ignoring parent or partner tasks
- Sending identity documents through the wrong route
- Failing to update course or living details
- Assuming an entitlement decision means payment is released
